| "Racist" |
| 01.30.04 (11:27 am) [edit] |
|
Affirmative Action has been a very hot topic lately, so much that you can barely escape a day on my campus without the subject coming up. Someone in a group turned to me today, in fact, and asked me what my stand was on the issue. I used to have an answer. Now, however, the more I think about the controversy, I cleary see both sides and, therefore, continually argue with myself. They both have equal numbers of pros and cons. I also noticed that I was so uncomfortable in this group of people that I could not explain some of my views against continuing with Affirmative Action for fear that I might be thought of as rascist for these ideas that are purely a matter of ethics. I believe the time has come where the term "racist" has caused more fear than when it began due to a new twisted ability to camoflouge.

What does it say about the people who help a stranger when they are screaming and crying on the street? What does it say about those do not help, but merely look and roll their eyes? What does it say about those who try to ignore that the activity is even going on?
What does it say about people who defend a child getting beaten? What does it say about those who want to help, but because they feel it is not their place, they instead try not to get involved? What does it say about those people who wonder how the adult could even be around children? What does it say about those who wonder what the child did wrong?
What does it say about people who act like idiots in order to get noticed? What does it say about those who act like idiots to get laughs and lighten the tension? What does it say about those who try not to like idiots? What does it say about those don't notice or laugh in response?
What does it say about you that you are thinking about it right now? What does it say if your not?
Which kind of person are you?

| Just looking.... |
| 01.26.04 (8:21 pm) [edit] |
It may take a minute to understand where I'm going with this, but follow along with at least some minimal paitence please. I promise, it will make sense. Have you ever been in a store and a salesperson asks you if you want to see anything in particular? Now, have you ever answered the question with a specific item, but when they bring it you realize it's not what you want but you feel trapped into the timeless question "to buy or not to buy"? Next question. Have you ever been fronted with the relationship status question on a profile or survey, and though you are interested in dating, writing a specific name or status seems like too much of a commitment? Final question. Have you ever been reading another person's writing and due to a slight raise of eyebrows on your part, though more a cause of yawning then error of writing, the other person immediately asks you what's wrong with it in a strongly defensive tone?
These and other instances call for two perfect words that roll off the tongue gloriously, "Just looking..." These words can be used to describe anything you are not willing to take responsibilty for or commit to. It's brillant! So next time you are faced with a question to which you do not want to answer, simply reply "Just looking..." and you will be spared stress of decision for another day. :D

| A cry to the literate world! |

I do agree that tevlevision is a wonderful invention. I also often find myself enjoying a movie to its counterpart, the novel. However, my generation appalls me sometimes as to the length of their attention span, or shall we say lack there of...Isn't there anyone out there who believes that reading is a valuable and satisfying activity :?: :?: :?:

| Take a stand! |
| 01.21.04 (4:53 pm) [edit] |
In my Racism in American Society class today, my professor took a survey of ethnic backgrounds, and then we discussed what the characteristics of an American. First we he asked the Italian-Americans to stand up, I did. When he asked the Irish-Americans to stand up, I did. When he asked the German-Americans to stand up, I did. Then when he asked the Native Americans to stand up, I did. I stood up from my seat for four seperate categories in a row. I was never so proud to be standing. I represented several large groups of wonderful people and cultures. I represented my family. I stood up for myself.
I have been here in the United States all my life. Some of my ancestors traveled over on large immigration boats in the late 1800 to early 1900's. Some came earlier and even faught in the Revolutionary War alongside General George Washington himself. Some of my ancestors were even members of the tribe that invented the first written language in the western hemisphere, the Cherokee nation. But what is the statue of limitations for describing ancestory? At what point will we be able to drop the Italian, German, Hispanic, Native, and/or African prefixes?
If someone was to ask my ethnicity, I would proudly stand up and say, "I am an American."

| Two different thoughts on the future. |
| 01.20.04 (2:25 pm) [edit] |
|
Does anyone remember the commerical, of course it was a car commerical, that said, "If we just settle for good enough, then will things ever be good enough?" This is the idea that we should strive to improve the world without looking back. I am a history major. My specific interests lie in ancient history. I believe that there are two types of people, those who agree with the commerical, and those whom I agree with. There are still so many things we have yet to learn from our past. So many of my generation are turning their backs on the past. This is a tradegy. This is about the future. What side are you willing to take? The side of ignorance, or the side understanding?

| Customer Service Grief |
| 01.19.04 (5:37 pm) [edit] |
|
I am a hypocrite! I couldn't believe it. I have worked at many customer service occupations and, in turn, dealt with many unsatisfied customers, to say the least. I dispise those people who can't be civil to someone that has no control over their problems. Therefore it was of my upmost dismay to discover that I am one of those people. The pain we feel, we unknowingly object into others, and so the vicious circle has no end. I formally apologize to all service employees for the discomfort that you will forever discover.

| The embodiment of "perfection" |
| 01.16.04 (12:43 pm) [edit] |
|
The other day my friend and I were walking and on the ground we saw the perfect leaf. Now, we are not nature girls by any respect. I would die without air conditioning, and she would plunge from a 400 story building if she couldn't watch F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Nevertheless, we were absolutely engaged by this perfect autumn leaf. Believe me, I'm still amazed myself that we actually picked it up and brought it home. By the next few hours it had been completely destroyed by humidity, ignorance, and time. (As most things probably are.) The moral of the story is that you can bet on some things to be constant in life. The fact that you will never obtain something perfect is one of those consistencies.

| America is stuck! |
| 01.15.04 (2:48 pm) [edit] |

It's true. America is stuck on certain ideas and assosciated words. Today I was researching some articles for a class and came across one that I can only describe as disturbing. The article was entitled [u]80 Percent of Chicago-Area Recruits are Minorities[/u]

| Thought on life |
| 01.13.04 (12:18 pm) [edit] |
|
It is the ultimate tradegy that life does not have a soundtrack! It would be so much more fun if music started playing to match your mood. For example, if you're sad, then country would start playing. If you're angry, then hard rock, metal, or alternative would play. If you're just hanging out at the beach with your friends in the summer, 8) then you could hear Bob Marley. Life would rock! Literally!
